The left’s crisis of confidence

The left is undergoing a crisis of confidence due to eroding credibility in the eyes of the public and loss of narrative control, such as by Elon controlling X/Twitter and Silicon Valley rejecting wokeness/DEI. This will get worse. It’s not so much about the rise of the right, but the left is losing the center and normies.

Tech companies realized that public perception matters about wokeness more so than things like privacy or ads, so we saw an instant shift in discontinuing DEI, but otherwise things are not that much different. Trump’s huge win in 2024 was a wakeup call. The public are consumers. They will only stomach so much of being propagandized to. See the decline of Hollywood box office receipts post-Covid, for example:

The left has always succeeded on the implicit assumption of their beliefs being the respectable or safe choice. For people who have no strong opinions on an issue or are low-information, defaulting to the left has always been the safer option; now that is changing a bit, but still early.
